Chosen Venue for Hypothetical Exhibit

Important Notice -

This category of blog posts is about a module/project for my Fine Art Degree. This particular module contains an element to plan every aspect and make the work to be put in a hypothetical exhibit. This means the exhibit isn't planned for real, it's all pretend for my grade. This is so we get real-life experience and learn the elements and factors of putting on an exhibit. This means everything is thought about, the context, budgets, audience, why etc but no Exhibit is happening. This blog post talks about the Baltic which I have decided to be the place where my hypothetical exhibit would "happen". I'm not affiliated with the Baltic; this is university work.

My art Practice and the themes I explore have the potential to resonate with people from all walks of life. By addressing queer theory, dynamics, and relationships, I'm contributing to a broader conversation about inclusivity, acceptance, and understanding. Through my mixed media approach and diverse techniques, I'm bridging different artist mediums and inviting a wide audience to engage with my work. My art has the power to connect with people, challenge societal norms, and foster empathy and compassion.

Within my work, several contexts contribute to its richness and depth.

One of the key contexts is my exploration of queer theory, which provides a theoretical framework for understanding and challenging societal norms and power dynamics. By delving into this theory I'm shedding light on the experiences and perspectives of the queer community.

Another important context is my focus on queer relationships. By depicting and celebrating these relationships in my art, I'm highlighting their beauty, resilience, and importance. This serves as a powerful statement against the stigma and discrimination that queer relationships often face.

Additionally, the social and political context surrounding the queer community is a significant influence on my work. Recent hate crimes, murders and political issues have created a heightened sense of urgency and need for awareness and change. My art addresses these issues in a subtle sense and sparks the conversation that contributes to a more inclusive and accepting society.

By considering these contexts and incorporating them into my work, I'm creating art that is not only visually captivating but also socially and culturally relevant. My art becomes a platform for expression, education and advocating for a minority group that is the subject of a lot of political and media attention in recent times.

Exhibiting at the Baltic would mean a free, educational experience, press releases and exposure to my work and the contexts behind them to the general public. This includes individuals, families and the LGBT community. It gives the chance to educate the youth and families who might have been brought up with no exposure to LGBT ideas and identities. The Baltic helps hit the audience my work is made for. Choosing the Baltic for an exhibit like this almost felt taboo, especially with the Baltics family-friendly emphasis and I guess it’s because I've never seen a lot of queer artworks in gallery spaces in a professional exhibit. I guess it’s a new thing at least to me that I'm only seeing now I'm looking for it every so often or the works that are in galleries are subtle or unknowingly queer unless you look into the work more so for someone just having a day out or something wouldn’t know and wouldn’t bother to look into the work more.

This is why choosing the Baltic felt out of a comfort zone, i guess in my opinion it doesn’t feel like a lot of spaces have that queer representation in or pass through their spaces a lot so presenting a idea like this for a large gallery felt wrong and unknown. I think this has to change and even hypothetically planned it breaks that comfort zone for future shows and aspirations to show works in spaces where it would be unfamiliar to see an exhibit like this. Choosing a family-friendly gallery space who gets a wide range of visitors and is in the middle of a major city and well known gives the exposure my show needs and an opportunity for education which I talk more about with the audience and workshop/artist talk later on.
